I started painting this Logo Ironman in September 2015, just after the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie came out. My kids were getting in to the Marvel craze and I wanted to hang some original avengers artwork in their rooms.
Shortly before painting this, I had been to the National Gallery in the London to see Van Gogh’s sunflowers. Van Gogh often used a technique called impasto where he applied paint very thickly to the canvas to give great texture and an almost 3D quality to his work. I tried to create a Digital Impasto effect in this painting and although it is difficult to do digitally, I am pleased how it came out and enjoyed working on this.
I created the painting using the following equipment:
- Artrage – Digital painting program for Windows, Mac and tablet. I used the Windows desktop version of the software for this piece
- Wacom Intuos 4 Graphics Tablet – A graphics tablet is a “must have” item for desktop based digital art and Wacom has always been my weapon of choice
- Nikon D90 Digital Camera – I used my digital camera to get the perfect reference image.
- Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod – Again, required to get the perfect reference image.
Adobe Photoshop – Creating the reference image followed by some minor adjustments to lighting and sizing with Photoshop.
Progress Photos
Here are some progress photos to show how I got to the final result.

This was the first Digital Lego painting I completed and was so enjoyable that I went on to create a few more.
Prints are available of this digital painting on request
