The first digital painting in my Lego series was Lego Ironman. I continued the theme following the release of the Lego Batman Movie and started out with the joker.
I created the painting using the following equipment:
- Artrage – Digital painting program for Windows, Mac and tablet. I used the Windows desktop version of the software for this piece.
- Wacom Intuos 4 Graphics Tablet – A graphics tablet is a “must have” item for desktop based digital art and Wacom has always been my weapon of choice.
- Lego Batman Joker Playset – I needed the Lego mini figure for a photo shoot.
- Nikon D90 Digital Camera – I used my digital camera to get the perfect reference image.
- Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod – Again, required to get the perfect reference image
- Adobe Photoshop – Creating the reference image followed by some minor adjustments to lighting and sizing with Photoshop.
Progress Photos
Below are some progress photos on how I got to the finished result
I started out by lightly drawing the outline of the joker. This can be the most time consuming part but it is also the most important part – Building a house on bad foundations is never a good idea and that is how I think when it comes to adding color to an outline.
One of the many benefits to creating art digitally is the ability to sample colors using software such as Adobe Photoshop or Artrage. Using my reference photo I could sample the colors and apply them to the character making changes as I saw fit.
With the drawing complete the only thing left to do was add some light enhancements in Photoshop.
That concludes my Lego Joker digital painting. Prints are available on request.
